about

In early 2010 I was living in the touristy part of Hollywood and trying to figure out what to do next. Since releasing "One Day E.P." over a year before, I'd been living out of a suitcase and travelling between New York City, Los Angeles, and Spokane. That time was spent performing. I played solo shows in every imaginable space and in several incredible theaters and clubs with Taylor Negron. I felt very at home on stage and decided to try something I had not done before.

I've always been drawn to live shows and recordings. I have been quietly recording my own performances for a long time. Usually the audience was not aware that the show was being recorded. Afterwards I felt no obligation or accountability to release the recordings, and since no one but me and the sound guy knew they existed, I usually didn't. This time, I told the audience what I was doing and advertised the show as a "live CD taping." I worked out the set list well in advance and I practiced it.

The day of the show came, and I had full-on strep throat. I know this because the day before a doctor told me so and prescribed medicine for it. I was not contagious by the time of the taping, and I didn't tell anyone I was sick. I drank Throat Coat tea and didn't talk much. My throat was terribly sore and I was convinced that this was the worst idea I'd ever had. Still, I insisted to the audience that we were recording the show and that I would release it. I played seven songs that night, and five of them are on this E.P. I didn't stick to my set list. I didn't play any of the songs perfectly. But I am really proud of this album and these performances, even if I'd been feeling 100%. It is an honest record of one night of my life.

Genghis Cohen's recording system back then was a simple stereo out straight to CD from the house mix. I boosted the levels and cut out most of my talking, and that's that. It was recorded on April 13, 2010, and Taylor Negron let me use one of his paintings for the artwork. I've been selling hand-made and short-run copies at live shows, and mp3's have been available for free (with suggested donation) on my website. Now it's finally on Bandcamp. I hope you enjoy it.

Track Name: Sentiment Of Winter (Live)
Young lady you're a fighter
Young beauty you're a queen
You've taught me of desire
You've left me questioning

Young darling I believed you
So young baby go be free
Just believe when I say someday,
You're gonna fall in love with me

Ah, the sentiment of winter early on when days are slow
Even well into December I would try and let you go
Someday, you're gonna fall in love with me

You're memory is like an island
Just beyond the seagull's range
Faint in shape on the horizon
Invisible on cloudy days

Ah, the sentiment of winter early on when days are slow
Even well into December I would try and let you go
Someday, you're gonna fall in love with me

Young sugar I'm a sinner
I've been lonely for too long
I am merely a beginner
Maybe one day I will be strong

So young lady, I forgive you
Yes, time is such a mystery
When you get to where you're going
I think you'll find you're missing me

Ah, the sentiment of winter early on when days are slow
Even well into December I would try and let you go
Someday, you're gonna fall in love with me

And now I'm walking through the rainfall as I call into the street
Here at midnight I am standing, soaking dark and cold and deep Someday, you're gonna fall in love with me
Track Name: North Star (Live)
Twenty years to this day
Since this ship set sail
We've been following the night
Just to hear it's tales
It's been a long time
Since I have seen a map
If there was a place that we were trying to go we'd be far off track

There's not a cloud
Up in the sky tonight
There's no land within
Our watchman's sight
The sea is calm and it sparkles
With the stars' reflected light
We've not even one candle lit
For the moon is unbelievably bright

No one has kept track of how far we've gone
And it's been too long to recount all we've done
Truth be told right now I'm not even sure where we are
We'll know which side of the world when we can see the North Star

As the stars in the East
Disappear to pink
I listen to the wind meet my breath
As I think of what more is out there
That we haven't yet seen
I could spend the rest of my life
In a new part of the sea

No one has kept track of how far we've gone
And it's been too long to recount all we've done
Truth be told right now I'm not even sure where we are
We'll know which side of the world when we can see the North Star
